The Lebanese American University (LAU) in partnership with the University of Balamand and other international higher academic institutions including the University of Barcelona worked intensively to develop a postgraduate program in organ donation and transplantation. The School of Medicine at LAU and NOD played a key role in organizing all the educational activities related to the program. Seven participants (Mrs.Claude Jalkh, Mrs. Rita Bejjani, Mrs. Noellie Eid, Dr. Patricia Hachem, Ms. Nada Honein,Ms. Dalal Khoury and Mrs. Sonia Stiban), all are health care professionals working at LAUMC RH, successfully completed the program and soon will receive their certificate of achievement.

EMPODaT is a TEMPUS project funded by the European Commission, the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA), shared between LAU School of Medicine and Balamand University Faculty of Medicine and Medical Sciences, to develop and implement a Postgraduate Program on Organ Donation and Transplantation, in accordance with the European Space for Higher Education guidelines. The learning activities employed a blended learning curriculum that will be used as a framework to create an LAU based program in organ donation and transplantation. The curriculum of the EMPODaT program covered aspects on almost all fields in organ donation and transplantation starting with organ procurement and eligibility, brain death diagnosis, family approach and ethical consideration, as well as steps involved in coordinating organ transplantation. Briefly, the candidates after completing the program are able to identify a potential donor and coordinate all aspects of the following activities leading to a successful transplantation. As such, the current candidates will play a key role in establishing a proper system for donor identification and subsequent successful organ transplantation.

Of note, the LAU EMPODaT team was composed of the following members: Dr Sola Bahous (Manager of the Program), Dr. Wissam Faour (Coordinator), Dr. Antoine Stephan (local and international expert, NOD vice-president), Dr. Reshdi Ahdab (local and international expert)
